First Solar Bike Path Opens in The Netherlands

The worlds first solar bike path has open in the Netherlands. The 70 metre path is a pilot of a new technology called SolaRoad, and the plan is to roll out the technology over a larger number of bike paths and roads.

A full 100 metre stretch of the path, due to be completed in 2016, will be able to generate enough electricity to power three homes.

The path has been created by a series of blocks, each consisting of a concrete base with embedded solar cells, and covered with a tempered glass surface. The blocks are set on a slight angle to ensure that water and dirt runoff the surface – keeping it clean and ensuring the efficiency of the solar power generation.

About David Rutter

Dave grew up on a small acreage on the outskirts of Sydney, within a stone's throw of the bush. Having spent a large part of his childhood exploring the bush behind the family home, much of his adult life has been spent exploring the world - he has lived in Sweden, traveled much of Europe, travelled in the Pacific and South America, and more recently in Asia. The Australian bush is however, the place where he feels he truly belongs.
