Manly Beach

Manly Beach is one of the great Australian beaches. It is a beach popular with both visitors and locals alike, but unlike Bondi it doesn’t feel as crowded due to its size. It is a long beach that offers great swimming and surfing, and close to the beach are lots of restaurants and shops. Because it is accessible by both bus and ferry, and because of the amount of parking available, many different people come to the beach, to surf, swim, soak up the sun, watch the sea, or sit at a nearby cafe. It is also a popular beach to learn to surf, with great instructors at the Manly Surf School. Board hire is also available. If you want a break from the beach you can hire a bike and ride along the footpath beside the beach.

Breaks:

The Bower (Fairy Bower): Point-break. Right direction. Paddle out from Shelly Beach.

South Steyne: Point-break. Right direction. Jump off the rocks from in front of the Manly Life Saving Club.

North Steyne: Beach-break. Left and right directions.

Queenscliff: Beach-break. Left and right directions. North end of the beach.

How to get there:

Ferry: Take the scenic route from Circular Quay to Manly. There are two options, the standard ferry and the privately run service Manly Fast Ferry. Both services run from Wharf 6.

Bus: Take a bus such as the M30 to Neutral Bay and get off at the stop on Military Road near Watson Street. Take a 143 or 144 bus to Manly.

Car: Heading from the city, you go north over the bridge or through the tunnel, and follow the signs to Manly through Mosman, onto Spit Road, over the Spit Bridge. Turn right onto Sydney Road, and follow it to Manly.

About David Rutter

Dave grew up on a small acreage on the outskirts of Sydney, within a stone's throw of the bush. Having spent a large part of his childhood exploring the bush behind the family home, much of his adult life has been spent exploring the world - he has lived in Sweden, traveled much of Europe, travelled in the Pacific and South America, and more recently in Asia. The Australian bush is however, the place where he feels he truly belongs.
